In astrology, a house is a sphere of human activity.
They were originally called "dwellings" or "domiciles", but in modern astrology they are called houses and their calculation, the domification system (from the Latin domum, "home").
The word "domicile" has remained to define the planetary regencies (relationships between the signs of the Zodiac and the planets).
The twelve domiciles, called houses, together form the great house of the zodiac.
They are twelve segments of the circle of the ecliptic and signify that which prevents the inhabitant of the house (you) from expanding his consciousness if he allows himself to be imprisoned by them.
The term "houses" in astrology refers to the division of the angular space between the so-called "angles", the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and the Bottom of the sky , into twelve sectors, which are not necessarily equal.
These four angles correspond roughly to the four cardinal points.
The house (or mundane) calculations made on the birth chart are actually the calculations of local astronomy, which place the Earth in its celestial position and include all those astronomical elements of a local type: horizon, cardinal points, local meridian, etc.
In other words, in astrology, the mundane term is equivalent to the local term used in astronomy.
The 1st house is the beginning of the twelve houses and points to the Ascendant (AC) corresponds to the sign of Aries, which is the source of the experiences that will shape the personality.
The characteristics of the Ascendant sign and those of the planets occupying the first house are reflected in our personality, sometimes more so than those of the Sun sign.
It is the self we show to others.
It masks the characteristics of the inner self symbolised by the Sun, which is connected to the world through the AC and projects itself outwards.
It speaks of vitality, strength, initiative and our daily decisions.
The 2nd house represents personal resources, whether material, intellectual or skills and talents. It’s the house of Taurus.
These are the resources we have at our disposal to achieve the things that give us security and stability.
It speaks to us of our scale of values and the attachment or detachment we have to our possessions and the use we make of them.
It is therefore associated with money, administration, purchasing power and attitudes, the tendency to save, debts, sources of income, property, innate or acquired talents and everything to do with the tools we use to achieve what we want and the way we use our resources, whether material or non-material.
The 3rd house corresponds to the sign of Gemini.
It represents the concrete mind.
It is associated with the way we think and communicate.
It is associated with mental agility, the ability to learn, and the ability to relate to the environment; it speaks of our relationship with the people in our immediate and daily social circle: siblings, neighbours …
It is also associated with short journeys and with things that arouse our curiosity and motivate us to learn, travel, etc.
The 4th house coincides with the Imum Coeli (IC; from Latin for "bottom of the sky"), which symbolises a reunion with one's origins.
It is the house of home and family.
The 4th house represents the relationship with parents and the image we have of them, perceived in one way or another depending on the planets in the 4th house.
It also represents relationships at a family level and speaks of childhood, roots, origins and family traditions.
It is an area of life where we feel 'safe' and intimate, an environment to which we belong and with which we feel connected.
It is the house of Cancer, where what we have learned in childhood resides unconsciously.
The 5th house represents creativity and self-expression. It is the house of Leo, where we want to shine, to feel special and unique, and where we connect with our inner child.
It speaks of love without commitment, the kind of person we attract and how we fall in love with them.
How we behave and what our courtship is like.
What we like and enjoy, our hobbies, our games, creativity.
How we try to impress others or make them appreciate us, seeking the approval that makes us feel special.
It also represents children as a creation, projection or extension of ourselves, and our relationship with them and with children in general.
The 6th house represents work, routine and health. It is the house of Virgo.
It tells us about the kind of work we can do, how we can serve others, our attitude to daily duties and subordination.
It is our behaviour and attitude at work and towards our colleagues, bosses or subordinates.
It relates to our daily habits and routines and how we manage our time to carry them out.
It is also related to health, and planets in the 6th house are related to illness.
The 7th house is the opposite of the 1st house and it marks the Descendant, the sign that sets over the horizon at the moment of birth and signifies meeting others.
Associated with Libra, it represents relationships with others that involve compromise or cooperation.
Marriage, contracts, partnerships and associations, both material and spiritual.
It is the way in which we make contact with the 'you are' as opposed to the 'I am' associated with the first house.
It is also the house of declared enemies, separations and dealing with the public.
The planets placed here speak to our ability to maintain these kinds of relationships and the kind of people we seek for them.
The 8th house represents material loss, shared resources, transformation, the occult, sexuality and death.
It relates to death and our attitude to it.
It is related to sexuality, in the sense of union or fusion with the other person.
Our attitude to sex and the way we perceive it.
It is related to inheritance, taxes and other people's property that others bring to us or that we have to administer.
Curiosity for the unknown, interest in the occult, the mysterious.
Secrets, fears, deepest unrevealed desires, secrecy.
This is the house of Scorpio; a house of change, transformation and instability, opposite the 2nd house (own resources vs. shared resources).
The 9th house represents the outside, the distant. It is the house of Sagittarius, opposite the 3rd house (concrete mind, relationship to the immediate environment).
It is associated with long journeys, foreign and distant places, as well as higher study and philosophy, religion or spirituality.
Is associated with the abstract mind and higher ideals.
Considered the house of spiritual masters, it is associated with an interest in understanding the why of life.
With the need to expand our knowledge to the point of understanding.
With the search for and transmission of wisdom.
The 9th house is where our particular truth is created, the truth from our point of view.
The 10th house coincides with the Midheaven (MC), which is social fulfilment, the feeling of having done one's job or achieved a goal.
The tenth house represents vocation, professional work.
It is related to status, success and social recognition, and in a sense it is our contribution to society.
The planets occupying it are concerned with our development in this sense.
Will, striving, perseverance to achieve goals, to feel fulfilled and to give meaning to our lives.
It is also associated with authority and power, with the people who exercise it (superiors, teachers...) and with our relationship and attitude towards them.
It is the house of Capricorn, opposite the 4th house (family, home).
The 11th house represents friends, teamwork and projects. It is the house of Aquarius, opposite that of Leo (5th house).
It is related to friendships and the groups or associations we belong to.
Integration and social life.
And teachers and people we can learn from.
Creativity expressed on a social rather than individual level, for the benefit of the group.
It also represents dreams, hopes, innovations, utopias, ideals, projects and desires in relation to a group.
The 12th house closes the circle and represents the psychic, intuition and the collective unconscious, symbolising an area of life beyond the personal.
The 12th house speaks of hidden or unknown potentialities and weaknesses.
When these are conscious, fears, complexes and insecurities arise, but also positive qualities if the planets in the house are strong.
It is the house of Pisces, the house of dreams and the mystical world, opposite the 6th house (health and work).
